Both courses teach you to audit against an ISO standard. The difference is the role you are preparing for.
| Internal auditor | Lead auditor | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Audit your own organisation’s system | Plan and lead audits — internal, supplier or (with further steps) third-party |
| Typical length | About 2 days | About 5 days, usually with an exam |
| Who it suits | Process owners, quality/IMS team members, department representatives | Quality/IMS managers, consultants, supplier auditors, aspiring certification auditors |
| Prerequisite | Basic knowledge of the standard helps | Good knowledge of the standard; foundation course recommended |
A rule of thumb
If you need people to keep your own system healthy, train several internal auditors across departments. If you need someone to own the audit programme, audit suppliers or move toward a career in certification auditing, choose lead auditor.
Check the credential
Lead auditor courses differ in who recognises them. Before booking, confirm which body accredits or awards the certificate and whether that matters for your goal. We state it for each course when you request dates.
